Subtly Coastal at our Project Seaside Retreat

A home by the beach doesn’t always need to filled with seashells and sea creatures to create a beach style retreat. Through the color pallet, plenty of texture, and beautiful, cozy furniture, we achieved a more contemporary coastal look.

After meeting with our clients and hearing their wish list, we knew this space would be used to either entertain their growing family, or for this couple to relax and enjoy a night of TV.

Starting with the main and largest element, this custom sectional is perfect for hosting family gatherings with their children, grandchildren, and their visiting dogs. For this reason, we used a soft navy performance fabric that also sets the tone for the color pallet. Today’s performance fabrics are made to withstand the test of time and hold up against the grandchildren’s sticky fingers, spills, and fading from the sun.

To soften the dark blue, we added a variety of pillows and blankets, which also helps to create a relaxing atmosphere to curl up and read a book or watch a good movie.

We love this area rug for its warm coastal tones and the abstract stripes resemble the look of sand and waves. An area rug is also a great way to pull all the colors together and ground the furniture.

To compliment the size of the sofa, a large wood coffee table was added in a soft driftwood stain, while a large rattan and rope chandelier hangs above.

Upon entering this space, we wanted chairs that would make a statement and not only look good from the front, but also from the back and these nautical string back chairs do just that. These chairs have a rattan base and are wrapped with bundles of natural abaca rope along the sides and back.

Natural materials have also been used in the fossilized clam shell table that sits between the chairs, while additional textures were added in the nesting side tables on the opposite wall.

Another important feature in any family room is the entertainment center. We chose to mount the TV above this low cabinet, which anchors the tv and adds storage for books and games. This furniture piece is made of a light, mango wood that ties into the room’s colors and is detailed with cane weave and iron legs

The original window treatments were replaced with flat fold, woven shades, for privacy and texture. We had pearl-colored panels made to soften and fame the windows, creating an airiness and breeze of that you get by living near the water.

Contemporary coastal style is defined by its clean lines, natural materials, and lots of textures — so go bold, but stick to simple lines and basic finishes.
